This little Fantail was so curious I had to move backwards even on macro.
The macro on the Tamron 70-300 starts at 180mm but bird too close for non macro picture.
Comments welcome.

Yes Ian, the problem is you're just a bit too close, and framing is too tight. Browse through the multitude of posts on this site for compositional hints.
I like the "out of the box" look of the image. I think it could be improved with better lighting. It seems very dark to me and I think some of the detail around the face could be brought out in post-processing.
I like the curious, happy expression. The transition from sharp to soft is so abrupt that it bothers me. I might work in PS to tone down that transition a bit. I know it isn't possible with the macro settings, but I wish for just a bit more DoF to get the bill in there too.
Thanks Jim and John Chardine.
I agree Jim that there is a big difference in sharpness but looking at it on this forum possibly a bit more levels and slight sharpening reduction might help
Appreciate your usual constructive insight.
John Chardine: Your comment gave me the thought to try plus levels: Appreciated.
I realise that selective sharpening of bill would make a big difference but am not up to this stage of editing.

I prefer the original post as you have been too agressive with the noise reduction on the repost and all detail is lost. The comp would have worked better as a vertical. The clipped toe and foot are bothersome to me. Love the pose though! Quite comical, and yes, it does look very friendly :-)
