Wendell:
The overall exposure looks pretty good, with nice details in the blacks, without blowing out the lighter areas of rocks.
Nice pose by the grackle, really shows off his long tail well.
I might do a minor crop from the top to go with a pano crop which really emphasizes the length of that tail.
For personal taste, I would also tone down the brightest rocks in the foreground.

A few distractions in the BG. I would consider cloning out the curved stick right over his head.

Bright FG rocks cause some distraction. Nice exposure and comp. Seems soft , probably due to the use of the 2x TC.

Randy, thanks for your comments . . . and you surely live up to your Sir Isaac Newton quotation. I'm curious about backgrounds: So many good images posted here have amazingly beautiful backgrounds, which don't seem to me possible with the camera settings used. Is it common, and desirable, to select the subject, then do a Gaussian Blur (or some similar correction) on the background?

Wendell:
My basic strategy re: backgrounds is to photograph the birds against a good one to begin with! This isn't always possible, but that is always what I strive for. This may be from a setup, or in the case of my loon photos, I move the boat, I go low when possible to throw the BG further out of focus, I use the widest f/stop I can, etc.
I use gaussian blur a couple times a year! Others use it freq. Just my personal taste really. I will use the clone stamp on low opacity to cover up unsightly issues in the BG.
