Common loon cruising close up

I like the head position with the curves, bow wake and blue accents to the predominant water color

As Doug said, I like this for your reasons but more, the light with shadow behind the head, and the eye is perfect. Very artistic comp. An award winner IMO, over the top as some would say, Super job Randy.

I feel like I could reach into the picture and touch the bird.
I really like the composition as well. Like the little feather in the beak.
the bird is so perfect that
I would clean up the 2 grey areas on the bill.

Nice one once again Randy. I just went out looking for loons on Sunday and Monday, very windy, no images, lots of cold and wind blown loons however. Will post when I get them.
