    Default Killdeer

My first post to this forum so I hope I'm doing things correctly.

I used the oil paint filter in the newly released Photoshop CS6 on a recent shot I took of this killdeer guarding it's nest. I kind of like the way this filter adds a bit of artistic flare to the original image. Image was taken with my new Canon 300 f/2.8 II lens in northern Alabama in early April.

    Cheers,

Welcome to BPN Mark (even if you joined back in 2009). Glad you are getting your feet wet by posting! Very nice image of the killdeer. Lovely red eyering. I like the filter you applied, but for this reason I have moved your thread to the "Out of the Box" which is perfect for this type of processing. Hope to see more from you, and please do comment on others' works too...all part of the fun here on BPN!

Mark, Welcome to OOTB!! The base image is really nice and I like the oil paint filtering a lot. Another option would be to have more room up top and to the right to give the kildeer a little more room. I love the colors in the background that mirror the rocks on the beach. You might want to lighten the dark blue spot on the upper right hand corner just a bit - it seems to draw my eye there. I hope we see more of your work here - this is very lovely work

Mark, Big welcome to OOTB. Great original capture. I agree with Cheryl, a little more room on top. Very nice painterly look with the filter. Excellent eye ring as noted by Daniel. Head angle and pose are very nice. Ditto the dark spot on the top edge. A fantastic first post and I am looking forward to seeing more!

Mark, welcome to OOTB. Excellent suggestions already made, RE lightening the blue area in the URC and perhaps giving a bit more room to the right and perhaps to the top of the image. Good job with the processing, and a strong base image of the bird. Hope to see more from you!

What a lovely, striking image! I love the processing you did--just the right amount. That eye stands out beautifully, and the feathers have nice details. The texture blends background and bird nicely. Glad you are posting here. Welcome.

Nicely done, Mark! Beautiful bird, capture, and comp. Like how your filtering adds texure to feathers and BG. Just wish you posted a larger size to see more of the details.

Thank you all for your constructive comments. I shall take them all to heart. I posted this image as medium size using an embedded link from my Smugmug account. I think I can go one size bigger perhaps but will want to edit the image first to incorporate your suggestions. This was my first post and I wasn't too sure which size image would be best or permitted.

    Many thanks
