    Default Bonaparte's Gull!

    Greetings folks,
The exclamation point occurs b/c I was so very pleased to be treated to a few fly-bys the other day. This is my favorite of the Ontario gulls, to be sure. I'm also posting this picture to ask you: is there a halo around my bird? Sometimes I notice halos when I've got a bird against a plain, light-colored background, but I'm not sure if I'm only losing my mind. I show the pictures to my long-suffering and highly patient birdwife and she says: "I don't know what you're talking about. That bird forum has made you crazy." "Crazier, wife," I correct her. et cetera.
    Canon 7D, 70-300L at 214mm. iso400, 1/2000, f5.6...you are looking at roughly 70% of the original capture.
Can't thank you enough for your comments, particularly regarding any nasty digital halos and so forth. I'm on a laptop, and although it's a good one, they are not as reliably accurate as a big-time calibrated screen of dreams.

    Jack,
I do not see any halo, but then I am also handicapped with a laptop. Usually you get the halo with extreme processing. I would love to add this gull to my photo file. You are lucky to have in your area. You have good detail in those wings.

Thanks Laurie. I've been meaning to open up a discussion RE halos, and shall do so presently in the digital photography workflow section of this fine forum. "Extreme processing" could possibly be a very very very bad reality t.v. show. You could be my co-star if you like!

    Hi Jack,
I don't see a halo. Nice and sharp and great upwing position. Good IQ evident in nice underwing feather detail,
    Gail

There is no visible halo that I can see.
I love these gulls! They are always a highlight to spring/fall migration.
I think you've done well to get some nice pop and contrast on the subject
against such a bright relatively featureless sky.
