This is gorgeous!! I wonder whether placing the perch slightly diagonally rather than horizontally could have been even nicer...?

Light quality: Awesome!
Details: Excellent
DOF: Cannot get any better.
Love the texture that the perch adds.
Compositionally, trading some of the space on top for some more
space on the bottom is worth considering.....This is a photo where
centering the subjects definitely works imo.

Hi Grace,
This is wonderful. The BG is "to die for" and the IQ is superb. I like the perch but I wish it had been placed diagonally. Minor nit though,

Beautiful shot Grace, excellent shot with fine detail.
My only criticism is the perch which I presume is willow, if indeed it is then I would have imagined this branch to have been vertical or certainly in some kind of upright/inclined position. My apologies if I am wrong but as soon as I saw the branch I suspected it had been placed in a horizontal position and this detracted from an otherwise superb shot.

Thank you all for your comments about this photograph. I agree 100% that a different position would have been better for the perch. I tried. But the buggers would not oblige when I placed it any way but horizontal. Why? I can only guess. This is a real ugly, industrial area with one narrow spot where I could place a perch and get this background. To the left (as viewed) is a chain link fence, topped with barbed wire, and to the right are telephone lines. All horizontal. They perch on the wires all the time. I've seen them mate, feed each other, relax, etc, all on these horizontal lines. Is that why they are comfortable with a horizontal perch? Not sure, but when I placed it in any position but horizontal, they shunned it. Jonathan, no need to apologize, I appreciate what you said. Maybe some of the photogs who know more about setting up perches than I do will weigh in with some tips.

Amazing image Grace!! I don't mind the horizontal perch as I associated that by it being bent that way by the two birds' combined weight. Excellent light. The only thing that could have been better is the female's tail swung over our way symetrically like the male's, but man, that is an image to die for!!

Hi Grace, love the light in this, and good to see the difference between the male and female. I like how they are facing each other, both sharp, and that BG is a killer. Im fine with the perch. An opportunity well taken.
