    Default Great Crested Grebe

    Attached Images Attached Images

First outing with a new toy - so went to visit my local Great Crested Grebes (Podiceps cristatus). Was delighted with the detail when I caught this shot - on the bird, but also in the greens of the water.

Canon EOS 1D MkIV, EF500mm f/4L on a flattened Gitzo tripod with Mongoose 3.6
    1/500 sec at f/6.3, ISO 800
PP included removing crud from water, light levels adjustment on the bird, some Topaz detail and sharpening for web presentation.

    Comments and suggestions welcomed.

Hi Gerald, I like the swimming pose and HA, and overall sharp where it counts. The droplets on the grebe add interest. Interesting colour to the water, different, and Im fine with it, as it is different, but would like to know what is reflecting on it to create the green colour.

Beautiful bird and great water! Very sharp as presented. I do wish the eye was better lit.

Thanks for your comments. Ofer, with my old MkIII, I would have needed at least some NR to get that smooth background, but the MKIV seems to handle the elevated ISO well. Stuart, water color is coming from trees overhead - the pond is in a small basin so the light catches the trees and brightens them. Daniel, agreed - I lightened the eye slightly, maybe should try giving it a little more.

    Regards,
    Gerald

Well done! Sharp as a tack and the water is great. I too wish the eye was brighter.

I liked such shtos a lot. nice texture in the water. Bird looks great. very sharp and nice head turn. If mine, I'd have kept more room above and below...but each one has different preferences.
