I thought to try my new D800 on piping plovers. I like the result though I must think of shallow dof more.

great light and separation from the BG here Allan...the OOF sand in front grabs my attention quite a bit because of the way it obscures the base of the plane of focus...
how much of a crop is this?
Allan, as i said on the post in ETL, you do not have to worry about getting closer with FX with the D800.
You can just crop instead of the camera. It will still have more pixels than any DX camera.
No need to shoot wide open at iso 250. You can stop down and use base iso of at least 1000 with the D800 and not
even need NR.
See the Flicker post above, 10% of the original at iso800. I used NR on the Bg only, not the bird or the tree.
Exposure is perfect, lots of details visible in the whites. Light quality is good, and the subject
pops well against the perfectly smooth background. Nit mentioned.
Question...why not just elevate your shooting angle a bit for this one and then angle down
just a bit to stretch the plane of focus, and or back up a just slightly to gain more dof?
Would that not have helped to lessen the impact of the oof foreground?
Allan, my point was not that you have to crop heavily.
Your DX was cropping for you, so you just take the same photo from the same distance and crop yourself.
Do what you want, I was just giving you my opinion.
I just don't see the reasoning behind having to get closer with FX.
The DX was not getting you closer.
More pixels on subject.
However, I do hear what you are saying Dan. I think if I had been higher the image would be better. was guilty of "lower is better."
