Took this image of the rare Takahe a few days ago, a captive bird @ Willowbank Reserve in Christchurch. Up until 1948 it was thought that these large 3kg birds were extinct. This one is an elderly male who resides with an elderly female who is rather shy. Their breeding days are now over so we were fortunate to get them here, which incidentally is the main location for hatching Kiwi eggs before returning them to the wild. Details: Pentax K10D with Tamron 70-300 @ 300mils. Time: Early afternoon ISO 400 1/500 @ F8 minus 0.5 EV. Editing included Topaz. Comments welcomed. Cheers: Ian Mc

    Hi Ian,

Nice to see some NZ native birds on BPN - and especially the Takahe! Terrific colour variation from the indigo through rich olive green in the feathers - splendid creature.
If you have room, I would be tempted to give him a bit more space all round. And it would also be interesting to see him photographed from a slightly lower angle if possible.

    Well done and thanks,

    Gerald

    Very nice image as is.
However, I would have given more space around the bird and would have tried a lover angle.
Of course I don't know if it was possible, the low angle, that is.

    Thanks Gerald & Karl.
The original was a vertical, but I used the full width when converted to horizontal, so no extra canvas available.
Will keep it in mind for next visit there.
    Cheers: Ian Mc
