    Default Turkey Vulture

Shot with Nikon D300s, Nikon 300mm (f/4), handheld. Overall I'm happy with the shot, but unfortunately didn't realize until later that I was in jpeg mode. Was still able to make some adjustments in LR. Cropped to vertical from the original. The original was a bit bright so brought down both the brightness and exposure levels a bit. Exposure under the wings (in original) looked just a bit dark on my screen so I brought those up a bit in Viveza. The jpeg file was already pretty sharp so didn't need much adjustment there. No adjustment in Color Efex, though more than happy to take suggestions on balancing the body (black) detail with the wings.

f/7.1, 1/3200 sec., ISO 800, pattern metering, aperture priority mode

Gotta love the 300 f4, it is one of the best mid-priced lenses Nikon makes....very nice details on the vulture, good work recovering underwing details. If it were mine I'd probably not center the bird in the image. Well done

    Thanks Paul,

I do like that lens - mainly because of the light weight, relatively speaking. Would be nice if it were a bit quicker-focusing but in terms of IQ - no complaints. Perhaps at some point they'll upgrade it and have a VR version (and a 3-step focus-limiter instead of just two). Most of the time I'm shooting above 1/500 sec. so in truth the lack of VR is rarely an issue.

As for the cropping I do have room on either side, and some above and below to re-work it.

Lovely flight pose here. You did a good job recovering the underwings. I am with Paul on a different crop. I would probably take some off of the right and bottom to take it off center. Colors go well together here.

Thanks Marina (and Paul): This particular shot has a lot of room to work with (on all sides) - here is an off-center version that is much less cropped. Not sure if this is closer to what you had in mind.
