    Don,

    Thanks for the picture and welcome, the way to improve is to post often and jump in and discuss other photos. A few things come to mind when I view the image it is tight the subjects needs room to breath and the bird's wings intersect and create shadow. Now this could be your intent it is different, but IMO does not leverage the beauty of flight and intersects the subject.

    You have picked a difficult situation with both a white-bird in flight (BIF) and metering with the sky or a bright light source behind the subject. Before I get into too much detail what shooting mode and metering system do you use, for example, AV and Evaluative. What did the histogram look like, was it a bit crowded to the left, overexposed. Looks like the sun was behind you what was the time of day.
