I think this is a hermit crab, seen on Dauphin Island. I did a lot of debris removal mostly with the spot healing brush and the clone tool, including a piece of grass across it's face. Then I used Oil Paint and Perfect Effects with 6 different filters. The last one is a "modern vintage" look with a little red light leak and enhanced the yellows and darkened it some. Then I added a vignette.

Judy, I really like the effect Oil Paint gave to the crab and the sand. I especially love the crab's expression and it's eyes

Hi Judy, love the filtering. Crabs are lots of fun, but I don't get to photograph them too often. Not a Hermit Crab (hermit crabs have the shell), but it does look somewhat like a larger species of Ghost Crab that I photographed on the Cuban island of Cayo Largo. Very nice work!

Thanks everyone! Andrew, I googled ghost crab and apparently that's what it is. I knew that hermit crabs live in borrowed shells, but I saw one on TV yesterday and it had eyes like that so I thought maybe it lost it's shell. Since I only get to an ocean beach about once every 10 yrs. it's the only crab I've ever seen other than on a plate or at Pike Place Market in Seattle where the king crabs are like one foot across!

Thanks Indranil! I think it must have been digging a den in the sand.
