    John:

A big welcome to BPN! I think you will find it a great place to learn and grow as a nature photographer.

I love the colors, pinks and blues. The concept of the in focus flying bird with out of focus background birds is solid.

I do think to be most effective visually however, the image would work better if there wasn't a merge between the flying bird and the others in the background.

I find that for birds in flight images, a wing position either full up or full down gives more impact than the straight across pose.

Generally I try to shoot at a higher shutter speed, around 1/1500s or faster for birds in flight. You had room to push up your ISO here. You showed good panning tech. to get him pretty sharp at this shutter speed!

I look forward to future posts. Please feel free to comment on other folks images, great way to train your eye, and foster the sense of community we strive for on BPN!

    Cheers

    Randy

I agree with above comments, but probably couldn't have written it as well....very nice capture though, and if you photoshop it, you could easily get rid of the background birds...well done

Thanks very much, I appreciate the comments. Will try boosting iso to get a higher shutter speed.

Welcome here John. I fully agree with Randy's comments on having the in-focus bird separate from the OOF ones. I agree with his other technical assessments too.
Still some nice colours here and the thinking was good! I would crop from the bottom to remove the 'gunk' in the water...
