We usually concentrate on "singing and flaring epaulettes" type images with this species, but it still looks very handsome in a static pose! When photographing birds in agricultural areas, fence-post selection is critical as you want the most beautifully weathered ones...those tend to have more character and colour. New posts, or shiny new barbed-wire just don't have that homely "rustic" flavour to them that can make bird-on-a-post photos charmimg
Canon 7D + 100-400L @400mm, aperture priority, evaluative metering, 1/250s., f/6.3, ISO 800, +0.7 EC, natural light, FF, the red epaulette was somewhat cooked but details recovered by adding cyan to the reds in "Selective Color".
