We usually concentrate on "singing and flaring epaulettes" type images with this species, but it still looks very handsome in a static pose! When photographing birds in agricultural areas, fence-post selection is critical as you want the most beautifully weathered ones...those tend to have more character and colour. New posts, or shiny new barbed-wire just don't have that homely "rustic" flavour to them that can make bird-on-a-post photos charmimg

Canon 7D + 100-400L @400mm, aperture priority, evaluative metering, 1/250s., f/6.3, ISO 800, +0.7 EC, natural light, FF, the red epaulette was somewhat cooked but details recovered by adding cyan to the reds in "Selective Color".

    Daniel:

Did you carry that post around with you!

He is all fluffed up, must have been a little chilly. Nice colors, good post. Good save on the epaulets.

    Cheers

Daniel, he looks a little sad. Gorgeous background and the post does have that old farm feeling to it, my in-laws backyard. Excellent exposure and nice and sharp.

Fantastic simple background. The bird is in a wonderful pose with good HA. Sharp and well exposed. I love the old post look with the flora of lichens and such and the colors work well with the yellows below the red of the epaulette.

IMO old worn posts work great and this one is a winner. The bird is exposed perfectly and very sharp, the bg is beautiful.
