    Default Dunlin?

Hello, I will be the first to admit that my shore bird indentification is lacking to say the least. So if my title is not correct please let me know, nicely of course. Taken at Fort Myers Beach. It is a pleasure to lay in the sand and shot these little guys.

7D, iso:400, 1/3200, 700mm, f/5.6. Thank you for looking and comments are welcome.

    Gary:

As a fellow Michigander, my shorebird ID is suspect as well, but I do believe this is a Dunlin as well.

Very nice whatever the species! Nice head angle, whites, shooting angle.

I think the small areas of blue add just enough contrast to the predominant brown tones.

I could see a sliver more sharpening on the head.

    Cheers

Nice image, Gary! I like the low angle and the HA. My call on this is a breeding plumage Western Sandpiper.

it's definitely not a Dunlin. I also vote for partial breeding plumage Western Sandpiper

Sorry about the mis identification. I looked it up in Artie's shorebird book to check, but obviously missed the call.

    Cheers

Dunlin doesn't have these colors and is bigger with a longer beak :)

    Jan:

I find it a bit of challenge to judge size of a single isolated bird in a photo, so often that doesn't help me with ID. The colors/ bill length makes great sense.

Good angle of shooting, nice HA and eye contact, Gary. Great overall picture.
I would use linear burn on the white underpart of the bird if it were mine, but it is perconal preferance, I guess.

Gary, excellent shot. low angle, bird parallel, clean BG, nice details. A mild round of USM on the bird might help.

Hi Gary, good shooting angle, and I like the various colours on him. The droplet on the end of the bill is a nice touch. Your repost does look better with the additional sharpening.

With my limited experience of American waders (shorebirds) in the field, I would also suggest Western Sandpiper BUT - Jan - bill lengths vary greatly among the various races of Dunlin, with the more northerly Greenland and Scandinavian races 'alpina' having the longer bills. The race that breads in the UK, 'schinzii' has a shorter bill, the same proportions as the bird in the photograph. With a bird in this situation it is obviously difficult to get an accurate assessment of its size.
