    Default Again: 5D III/1.4X TC/800 f/5.6

Yup. This image was created with the Canon 800mm f/5.6L IS lens, the 1.4X III TC, and the EOS-1D Mark III. ISO 400. Evaluative metering +2/3 stop: 1/500 sec. at f/5.6 in Manual mode. f/5.6 is not a typo .

Don't be shy; all honest comments welcome.

Hi Artie, Great details in the whites and real depth in the colors. Is that a highlight on the eye or should I clean my screen? Or both?
    Best wishes, Gerald

Thanks G. But confused. I see a pinpoint highlight at the top of the pupil....

Beautiful, expressive image. I always love tight portraits like this that are executed so well. OK I'll take the bait- I don't get the f5.6 but I can never solve those sorts of conundrums. So how did you squeeze f5.6 out of an 1120mm f8 lens???

Thanks John. Tape the pins trick. AF slow and chattery but accurate. Other tips will be shared in my forthcoming 5D MIII User's Guide.

    Are you handling BPN articles?

OK got it Artie, the 5DIII thinks it's an f5.6 lens.

Is BPN Articles new? Not sure what they are.

Very nice close up, I wish the beak tip was sharper though, you just ran out of DOF.

Hi Artie, I understand the reason for the catchlight / highlight, but since it is a pinpoint, it doesn't look entirely natural to me.
You sure are having fun with that 5D MkIII, though.
    Best wishes, G.

Agree about running out of d-o-f but for 28 years I have been focusing on the birds's eyes at or close to the wide open aperture so it is not likely I will be changing any time soon . The bird was moving quite a bit so I wanted to stick with 1/500 sec. And stopping down brings up the BKGR... I do appreciate your stopping by though!

Ah, I checked the EXIF; fill flash at -2 stops with the Better Beamer explains the pinpoint highlight.

Thanks Peter. Background and bill clean-up took about 25 minutes.... As always, I used the Patch Tool, the Clone Stamp Tool, and a series of Quick Masks (all as described in detail in Digital Basics). The two corners were quite tricky....

Only after looking at the original frame(pane 13) but now I see that the spiky "hair" at the back of the head has a green tinge to it. I'm guessing from your BG touch up.

    Awesome otherwise!! LOve the tongue

Nice picture, Artie. It really draws your attention to the eye and area.
I'm wondering as to why you did not go up with the ISO as the 5D MIII suppose to handle high ISO so well.
You could have got some more DOF.
On the other hand you probably did not want more DOF at all for the aforementioned reason, draw attention to the eye, that is.

Love the comp, the breeding colors, the lovely bg, and the tongue. Above reasons notwithstanding, I'll cast another vote for a little more DOF.

I love the tongue, killer breeding colors, nice details. I could go either way on the "depth of field issue", love it as is. One question however please, how far away were you when you imaged this fine bird?

Lovely shot I am still confused though. OK I understand the focus bit, but the lens is 5.6 and the converter surely means you lose a stop because there is a greater distance between the the chip and the lens???

Super IQ here, very nice portrait Artie. The 5D3 looks to be a great tool.
The tongue puts it OTT for me.
    Just check the OP text:

Artie, I like shallow DOF here. excellent details, whites and plumage. Tongue is great.

f/5.6 is just the reported f-stop in the data. In reality, it cannot be, right? its really f/8....if my understanding is correct.
