Default Another 5D3 image: Avocet territorial dispute

Anther image taken with the EOS 5D Mark III at Palo Alto Baylands. The larger size shows the IQ of the new camera, it is great.

    Hi Arash,

Outstanding details and flight pose of the 2 birds, especially in the large version, but I would prefer to see the horizon horizontal and higher or lower to avoid bisecting the image.

Thanks Richard, the image is actually level (notice the water). It would be unnatural if I rotated it. I was at water level so lower was not possible and higher will make the shooting angle steep and unattractive.

Awesome feather details and lighting! You & Artie are really showing the 5d MarkIII to be a great camera.

Remarkable to get both this sharp.
The large version is killer, the camera looks pretty good to me, but then your mark IV looks like this quality as well.
This shot is one of your best though for me.

Have you formed an opinion on the AF yet with respect to the 5D II and Mark IV?

Awesome capture Arash. To get both birds in focus with this kind of interaction is great. I find the best way to tell if a photo is level (when taken on water) is the depth of field, if it is level the out of focus foreground will be level with the bottom edge. That would mean this photo is just about as level as it could be.

In the hands of an amazingly talented flight photographer... Agree on the lovely image.

Arash: what focus pattern were you using? ps; I am fine with the position of the horizon line.

    Thanks Artie, much appreciated.

I use center point + 8 expansion points (just like the MK4).

Thanks everyone for nice comments, one of the other features that I like is the electronic level that is displayed via the AF squares in the finder, it makes it possible to accurately level the camera while landholding (for stationary shots of course)

I still have to experiment with different parameters to see what works best for different birds. Overall it's pretty good and in par with 1D4 in terms of tracking with busy BGs. The super telephoto servo drive is not as fast but this is due to 5D's lower capacity battery pack as Chuck mentioned.

Also, it's is somewhat hard to compare because 1D shoots at 10 fps so it has less time between shots to lock and track. I suspect if you slow down the 1D4 to 6fps its keeper ratio will increase. I think the main comparison should be between 1D4 and 1DX.

YAW. Do you know if DPP shows focus points? It looks as if there was barely a sensor on either bird. I think that they call that one "Surround."

Arash, this shot is a killer, I do love actions shots...
I bought a 1D4 (used but like new 1 year 12500 shutter actuations), is the 5D III really in par with the 1D4?
I had a 7D and in focus speed, af tracking, etc, its like night and day...

Artie DPP does show the AF points but if you lock focus and recompose it does not show which one(s) was/were active..

yup it shows the AF point. the AF cluster was centered on the landing Avocet (I have cropped the orig from left side).

Hi Arash, great flight postures from both Avocets, love the light and colours, and both sharp. Your larger version rocks.

Arash, I think I know the spot you must have photographed this from. agree with your choise of the shooting angle. good thing you got both in the same plane parallel to sensor. great action and details.

Nice flight shot Arash. Actually the Mark IV has a maximum of 6 expansion points (and the 7D has only 4). Eight expansion points is new on the 5D III.

very fine! but when I looked at your larger image, you have been producing great images of these birds for quite awhile....and with all sorts of cameras...even one with a Kodak disposable....Ok kidding about that but really an exceptional gallery of those birds..great work
