    Default Gray-headed Fish Eagle

I photographed this eagle while looking for Tigers, in India, March 2012. I would have liked a bit more head turn toward me but this eagle was facing the water and soon flew off in that direction.

Canon 1D Mark IV, Canon 400 DO f4 IS + Canon 1.4x, 1/200, f5.6, ISO 400, resting on a bean bag on the jeep frame.

    c & c most welcome.

very nice pose and great to get light on those feathers. Head looks a bit over sharpened to me.

Arash, I struggled with the sharpening of the head. Comments on my earlier posts were that I did not sharpen enough. So I tried something different and sharpened after I sized for the web. (Do not have my new glasses yet). I'll try again. Any workflow advice?

Nancy, was the head sharp in the original or did you try to sharpen it in post?

if it is soft in RAW unfortunately it cannot be recovered by sharpening. Sharpening is for bringing out detail that is there to begin with but if it is soft sharpening will only bring out noise and artifacts. it's best to get the files as sharp as possible in camera.

Did you put the focus point on the head? your shutter speed was low as well, ideal exposure for this situation is f/5.6 1/800sec ISO 800.

Nancy, agree with Arash. sharpening if used on soft images, can cause more damage. I am little suprised that you got that low a SS. It probably was not as bright as what it seems. with that camera, dont hesitate to increase the ISO.

liked the image design and the clean BG.

Nice shot, shame the head was not as sharp as you wanted. I suspect it may look a little better if you lower the brightness on the head, this means the accutance will be reduced slightly when sharpened so it will not look so oversharpened. It won't make it sharp but I think it will make it look a little better.
