    Default MALACHITE KINGFISHER IN ACTION

    Attached Images Attached Images

A Malachite Kingfisher - doing what it does best . Just after it emerged from the water after a successful dive ,with a tiny fish in its beak.
It hunts from a perch about 1.5m above the water. The difficulty is to try and anticipate where the bird will hit the water. This is virtually impossible to predict.
(It would look in one direction and dive in the opposite direction ! )
The frame prior to this one showed the bird still mostly submerged and rising ,but it was oof.
To freeze the wings one requires a ss of 1/4000 or higher ,which was not possible in this case (except pushing the ISO ).I quite like the wing blur in this case.
I will later post a larger perspective of this frame which shows the pool from which it emerged.

excellent shot Arno, love the pose and the water trail might crop tighter. would not hesitate to go to ISO 1600 with 1D4.

No need to go to 1/4000, much rather like the way it is, sharp head wings showing movement, much better than a totally frozen bird.

nice timing here Arno! This has to be Marievale - know the conditions well...
ditto Arash - I push my D3s to ISO3200-4000 there to try and maintain SS, 1D4 shouldn't have a problem going to 1600 or even a tad higher.
