    An action shot this time, unfortunately I could not do anything about the mossy log.

    Jonathan;

    Strong sense of action. The log is distracting. I would burn it in a bit to reduce its contrast with the BG, and consider some alternative crops from the right to reduce its impact on the image.

    Interesting shape in the water below the bird. Was the minnow in some sort of submerged basket?

    Cheers

    Nice action shot Jon, presume thats an exit wave on the water? Imagine if you had been lower, but still good as is.

    The image was taken from a hide on the river bank. The fish were contained in a large sheet of pondliner making a tank and the perch was about 5 feet above the tank surface. On average the bird left the bird hit the water and returned in 1.5 sec. I auto focused half way down the tank and set to manual. As you might expect there was no predicting where the bird dived or exited, but it was usually in the opposite place that I had anticipated! I was amazed how many fish these little bird eat, they would take two or three and usually be back within 30 min and take another two and then back in another 30-60 min. There accuracy was inconsistent, I have a few shots were on bird caught two fish in one dive and on other occasions it took four dives just to catch on fish. There was a male and female on this particular stretch and they had recently begun tunneling for the nest. I will post a shot a little later with mud on the bill..... and maybe a shot with some fish... and maybe one in strong side light - you will have to tell me when I bore you with the kingfisher shots. I was there from dawn to dusk so as you may imagine I took a few images

    Can I just say I'm a bit obsessed with Kingfishers. Agree about the log but I really like the shot. I have spent many hours photographing them and found it to be a bit hit and miss when they exit the water. But apart from the log a really nice shot. Have you seen Charlie Hamilton James book on Kingfishers? Worth a look.

    A very hard shot indeed. You did well under the circumstances. Would love to see more.

    Sounds like you had tons of fun!! Good action as mentioned, and I like the various drops in the water. The log is indeed unfortunate, but I like it better when I "browser crop" away the top layer of water. Wish the subject was bigger in the frame.
