Had a ball going out and doing some photography with Marina Scarr a few times down in Florida in February. We went out in the Sarasota area one day on a friend's boat and got pretty near a great blue heron nest. I got many images of these little guys, both at rest and also during their intense jockeying for fish when the parent returned to the nest. One chick was of course the victor, and this was my best capture of that one moment, since heads are distinct and at a decent angle to the camera here. I definitely would appreciate help on this image though, I feel like it's pretty busy and I have some questions--leave it as it is, or clone out vegetation in upper right, and maybe even parent's body? Though I think that helps tell the story. I did do some cloning of some vegetation to neaten it up a bit as the cluttered look definitely does not appeal to me. But that's the way their nests are, I guess.
This is about a 35% crop. Did slight vignetting, SH, NR.
Would very much appreciate any and all C & C. Thanks for looking.

Great shot with excellent detail on the feathers. Exposure is great despite the harsh light, and the DOF is perfect.
I would have preferred a slightly different framing to include the tail of the adult on the left, and leave the vegetation on the right out of the frame.
You could also clone out the leaf behind the chick on the right, if your ethics allows.

    Congratulations,

    Xavier

Great action shot, Melissa. I'll second Xavier's cropping suggestions, if they're possible.

    Hi Melissa,
My two cents worth- Clone out the vegetation in the RUC and include Mom (or Dad's) tail. And since you have the cloning tool chosen I would get rid of the stem that intersects with the chick's beak on the left and clone out the flower between the right chicks' wings!
I like the image and the the action portrayed. If I have one nit about this it is that the fish tail is on the wrong side of beak. Excellent IQ,
    Gail

Melissa, good comments by Xavier and Gail. I also would tone down the nest sticks below the chicks. Other than that very nice image with two great looking chicks.

Thanks for the comments, you all. Ok, cloned out that vegetation in URC and included parent's tail. Is this better? I had a hard time getting rid of the little flower or whatever it is behind the chick on right, as I was fond of it, but will evict it if others feel strongly.

Much, much better. I would add a touch more room on the right ~ say 5 % more. Really like this ( and still wish for the twig under the beak to be gone) and am getting to like the little flower!

Oops! Missed that, thanks a lot Gail. Here it is with a bit more space on right, plus that twig taken out.

Nice behavior scene. I would have cloned the leaf between the wings of the facing chick, which I find disturbing.

The second repost is a real keeper. It tells a great story. I would keep the leaf between the chick's shoulder blades. The BG is actually quite nice and I like the portion of the adult's body present in the frame. Your final product was really worth it.

Wonderful image. Great setting, excellent job on gettting both chicks sharp, very nice background, and your last repost is much better.
    Well done.
