Witnessed and photographed some pretty amazing behavior at Fort DeSoto. I was out in the middle of the marsh sitting in waist deep water photographing godwits foraging. Suddenly, a willet began calling loudly and drew my attention. As he inched closer to the female, she leaned over in a submissive positive, and he jumped on her back. They proceeded to engage in one of the most violent copulation scenes I have ever seen. He pinned her head down in the water and clamped his beak around her neck. From then on, it was a battle with the birds leaping around in the air and water, all the while the male's beak still clamped around her neck.
Canon 13D, Canon 500L & 1.4
F10, 1/2000sec, ISO 640, manual mode
Feisol tripod, Jobu head, sitting in the water up to my waist
C & C always welcomed and much appreciated.
