Hello everyone. I'm submitting this one for some input on the tones. Sometimes black and white conversions can be tricky, and I'm not sure I've done this justice with my processing. I converted it to black and white using NIK Silver Efex and gave it a slight diffusion blur look in Topaz lens effects.

I like the B&W conversion. The image design would work much better for me if the bird were exhibiting a more erect posture with the head angled a bit more towards us. Welcome to BPN. Any relation to Peter (of bird call software fame until he was put out of business by i-Bird)?

Cynthia, I like the conversion with the soft tones. The sharp face and details make this special. Agree that a better head angle would be good. I also think that the subject is a bit centered. With the bird looking to the right I feel that the empty space behind it could be trimmed up. I most especially like how you created the vignette. It seems very natural and leaving an "escape route" in the vignette is often an over looked touch. So nice work!

Denise, great comments. So, when using a vignette, you are saying it is not always best to have it be uniform and predictable? I will have to look at this closer because I'm not seeing how it appears centered. I agree with your comment about the head position though. Thanks for the input. This is exactly the kind of scrutiny I am looking for and need. Thanks everyone.

When I mentioned a more upright pose the inference was that that would effectively have moved the bird pleasingly to the left side of the frame. And with the vignette, I would have been OK with it there in the SQ format. In 3X2 we generally want the bird well back in the frame....

Cynthia, I was actually trying to say that the fact that it wasn't uniform and it did have a random look is what I liked.

ok, I'm clear now. I actually prefer the look of non-uniform vignettes myself.

Cynthia, I like the toning and the silvery effect you got from the diffusion blur. The vignette is especially nice also I prefer Denise's crop I think.
