Default ***Bald Eagle Screaming*** Warning GRAPHICS!

Another one taken last year in Sheffield Mills, NS. I am not sure about the graphics character of this image but I did not want to take any chance.

    Canon EOS 7D Canon IS 600 mm 1:4,0 + TC 1,4X - 1/2500s f/8.0 iso800 Full Frame

    C&C : thanks in advance!

Like the detail in the feathers here. Great screaming pose, great HA and like how the snow is reflecting the sky. Not to graphic. Nice work.

Lots of good images like this one tonight that are not processed optimally.... This one is way too dark. Way.

For the repost a bit of BKGR clean-up with some NIK Color Efex Pro Detail Extractor (at about 30%) and Tonal Contrast (at about 50%) erased selectively from the head. Click here for a Color Efex tutorial and to save 15% on any NIK products. Lightened the whole image and sharpened the face and head with a Contrast Mask as described in detail in Digital Basics. The next free update will include additional NIK stuff.

A bit too clear to my personal taste (specially between the top of the head and the snow) but an interesting result. I am just trying some work on it right now.

I forgot to mention that I was confused by your "Warning Graphics!" Now I am confused by your too clear comment. Do you mean too bright? Maybe yes on the top of the head a bit but the other 99% is a huge improvement. If the whole bird looks too bright for your taste you need either to check the calibration strip and/or calibrate your monitor?

    Are you on a MAC?

Not sure about my repost either. I can see what you mean by «way too dark» but on what can I base my judgment to decide if it is ok or not?

You base your judgement on the images.... Your repost is better than the original post which was as you realize, much too dark. But the repost is still a bit on the dingy side with greyed out WHITEs; in short, it could use a bit more contrast.

I meant too bright. I am on a PC and I can see all the stripes below very clearly. The BKGR cleaning is a nice plus.

On my trial I tried NIK version 3.0 with tonal contrast over all the image (I do not know color Efex quite well : I simply drag two of the upper sliders down a bit and that's all).

When I wrote : warning graphics I simply meant that the picture might hurt some people with the prey underneath the bald eagle and the piece of bloody meat on the snow. My first language is French so I might sometimes make mistakes using english, sorry.

Yves, I like your repost. Although Artie's version is a cleaner look, for me, it is also starker and maybe not as realistic. It's such a tough call, so I guess we all have to process as we would like to portray the image. Love the calling pose.

working back from the raw file and putting a +0,50 on the exposure slider then adding some contrast in PS and cleaning BKGR plus adding a bit of tonal contrast, I think I have removed the bluish greyish cast and got some white whites.

All comments are welcome! And thanks also to all of you who will reply!

very nice calling pose and prey, my personal preference is frame #3 or #11. would leave the texture in the snow. whites look good in the reposts and exposure is nice ,sharp.

What an engaging image, Yves. Very well done indeed. My favorite of the bunch is #11...

Yves, Sometimes you can see all the stripes but if your monitor is not calibrated brightness can be out of whack. Graphics refers to bold designs or letters. You were looking for "graphic." But there was not warning necessary for this image as folks sometimes post much gorier images. Not to worry though, your English is certainly beaucoup mieux than my French!
