    Default Morro Bay Dirt Bird

    Attached Images Attached Images

The Long-billed Curlews at Morro Bay were even tamer in early April than they were when I visited in January 2009. This bird was photographed with the Canon 800mm and the EOS-5D Mark III. ISO 400. Evaluative metering +2/3 stop: 1/1250 sec. at f/5.6 in Manual mode.

Don't be shy; all honest comments welcome.

Really nice Artie. I like the way the water has curled around the legs. Nice light and prey is always a bonus. I think this would also look nice as a pano crop with some off the top because of the strong horizontal line of the foam,

From an admitted claustrophobic, I feel cramped by your repost. I'd split the difference and then trim a bit off the left to balance. I do love this image. Bird and prey are fine, but the foam splashing up on his legs really makes this one interesting to me. Nice light, too.

Thanks Grace. I don't like tight either (with birds in the frame at least) but I am OK with the space in the pano crop. Did that one for Gail. I am fine with the OP and would be fine with any amount off the top. BTW, one of the things that I teach in similar situations is for folks to try to time the shutter release so that the breaking wave is down by the feet rather than behind the bird's head. I followed my own advise and then got lucky with the splashes....

Good advice that you give folks. I have employed it when photographing gulls foraging in breaking waves. Also, your technique regarding sparrows and head angles that you shared recently (not trying to time the perfect head angle, but sending a burst) also works for plovers.

I like the OP the best because the incoming wave anchors the photo. Sharp, great prey, pose and of course the boots. A pleasure to view.

Another vote for the OP and the pano being a tad cramped. Love the foam around the feet, the light and the catch included.

Awesome OP here . Brilliant light and the catch is a bonus . What puts this over the top , is the foaming water near its legs .

I like both crops but prefer the OP for the space above. The bird is in excellent light and very sharp and I like the food morsel. The detail of the foam splashing up around the leg and the rock is perfect.

After further review it looks like the foam is splashing around two rocks and not the leg.

Hi Artie, great timing to capture the surf splashing up around both legs as the Curlew walks in the foam. Good walking pose, sharp, and I do like the overall light and colours in this. Good DOF too. Well captured.

Great image, Artie! Unfortunately your street ID is incorrect....this is a Morro Bay TRASH BIRD! That's what we call um on the left coast!

Still one of my very favorite shorebird species and Morro Bay is the place to photograph them.

Hey Jack, No rocks at all on that flat sand beach. Just an illusion :).

Artie, excellent light and pose. and the splashes as well. agree that the repost is a bit too tight. My personal preference would be somewhere between the two.

Amazing as always, Artie. I like Gail's idea on this one and prefer the 2nd post. The crop really makes me focus on the bird and the boots, and gives it a more right-to-left horizontal movement.

Love the light and the Curlew's pose Guru Artie. The waves at the feet adds a punch to the image, I like the original image better as I prefer open spaces.
