I visited Crex meadows in Grantsburg, Wisconsin today and found alot of the water frozen... I thought this was going to hinder my efforts, but little did I know some very small open water area's would be holding species I normally would have a difficult getting close to. This was taken while laying on my belly in wet snow. (the only angle I could get)

Oh wow, the low angle is just perfect offering an intimate moment with this little guy!! Just a few points to improve this already good image: a slight CCW rotation, a bit of lightening-up of the face (and especially the reflection in the eye), and then cropping to just above the lower bright band (and a bit at left).
kewl.. I didnt have time to run up to crex today.. so I stayed right around here.. all the waterfowl are scrambling to find open water right now.... meanwhile the harsh weather is really making the warblers, bluebirds, swallows, herons and such really work hard for food.. Id say to a certain extent many are desperate.. I probably had over 200 birds at my feeders today.. and the coopers in the area is VERY happy about that....
anyway.. very nice shot.... I will probably run into up there someday... I only live about 35 miles away from crex.... and I run up there often.. and of course to fish lake... (how was that today btw? usually its better for waterfowl than crex)
Mike,
As Daniel and Maxis suggested, applying Curves to the face--especially the eye--of the grebe would enhance the image. Working on the ground certainly yields good results--if you haven't picked one up you might consider purchasing a panning ground pod from Artie.
