Morro Bay was mega windy in the afternoons with gusts of 45-50 mph.... Every day for a week. As I was heading back to the car after another fizzled sunset I saw the beach grasses blowing and blowing. I created 40 images at shutter speeds varying from 1 full second to 1/15 sec. 39 were insta-deletes. This was the very first one.... Go figure. Canon 800 mm f/5.6L IS lens with the EOS-5D MIII. ISO 100. Evaluative metering +1 stop: .8 sec. at f/32. Don't be shy; all honest comments welcome.

Artie, I like this a lot. I can feel the wind in the grasses and I love the lighting and the diagonal bands of color in the grasses.

    Artie,

Why the long 800mm prime instead of the let's say a 28-135 for instance?

I like the flow of the grass and the diagonal comp. The green color of the grass looks a little unnatural to me. I converted it to a B&W with Nik Silver Efex. I kept the contrast low to go with the softness of the grasses, not sure if you'll like it.

I am a telephoto kind of guy. I like the narrow angle of view. I actually had the 24-105 in my vest but did not think about using it....

Besides the strong diagonal and the blur, it's the color that really does it for me in this image. Unnatural green, yes, but I like it, anyway. The colors pretty much work together to my eye. In fact, one of the first things I noticed was most of the parts of an unsaturated ROY G BIV gradation going from the bottom to the top.

Sorry Denise, my vote is for the color version. After all, the colors make it pop but allow the fog to subdue the look. I think the b&w version would be better with more dark to light tones and a bit more contrast. But the color as posted is best to my eye. A nicely seen and well photographed image here.

Artie, I really like the glowing gold color in the grasses, and those wispy tops tossed by the wind.

I like the B&W version; thanks! I probably over-did the NIK stuff and saturation. Here is a much softer softly colored image that is much truer to what I saw.

The repost really is they way to go, the colors in the original for want of a better word are "funky".

I know the feeling about going overboard on effects. Sometimes I work on an image and really don't know where to stop...
Topaz, CS5, Nik, Photomatix, etc., There are days I long for just being creative without all the help...not sure if you know what I am getting at.

    Nice work

Agree. A Mr. Famous Bird Photographer once said, "Whenever we learn something new we tend to over-do it for about a month." Now all I need to do is learn that lesson

Hi Arthur, the repost in pane #10 does it for me. Lovely amount of blur and the diagonal is nice too.
