Gail, good call on f-stop...liked the details in the dark areas. better wing position on the near wing would have been ideal...but that is really not up to you. Its what your fps captures.

Lovely detail Gail and very well exposed. I like the splash of red. Would have been nice if the dark shadow behind duck's head was not there but take what you can get. I really like the eye contact.

Really nice wing flap, Gail. I like the eye contact, the head angle, the great detail in those dark feathers. Nice job. Have you tried to lighten that dark patch in BG, say in Viveza? I think that would help the scaup's head stand out more. Cool red tone in those reflections.

Nice image, caught the flap at just the right time. At first, I wasn't sold on the Red, but it grows on you and does add to the scene.

I love it. I understand the critique about the dark patch behind the head, but the bird stands out anyway. This has a real 3D feel to it, and what a handsome bird!

Saw my first pair ever of these on the local pond this evening, and just sat and watched them with binoculars for a half hour. Didn't have a camera, and they were too far away anyway. I envy you the shot, but know you earned it.

Thank you all for your helpful comments. I hadn't even noticed the black area behind the head. I love all these extra sets of eyes on BPN! Here is a repost with some cloning, patching and burning.

Hi Gail, good placement and angle in the frame, and well timed for the wingflap. I like the overall exposure on the scaup, as you have brought out the green sheen on his head nicely, together with the underwing detail on the far wing. Great job on your repost.
