    Default 5D MIII AF Rocks

I made it down to the lake by my home this morning for the first time with my new 5D Mark III. All that I can say is wow! I had been thinking that the all new AF system would be the best ever and my initial take is that is exactly what it is.... With the tripod-mounted Canon 800mm f/5.6L IS lens and the EOS-5D MIII. ISO 400. Evaluative metering off the sky +1 stop: 1/2000 at f/5.6. (Mongoose M3.6.)

Excellent flight image, Artie. I'm happy to hear that the camera works very well.
I can hardly wait to get mine which can be month away.

Did you have any issues at all with the slower frame rate compared to the MKIV? ( I know you're not a "machine gunner")

No. Five years ago 6 fps would have been magic.... What was strange was the rather tinny sound of the shutter firing, not like the clunk of a pro body. I need to get the vertical grip!

This image looks fantastic and the images on your blog are smooth as silk. Artie, have you tried it the af in low light situations? I've heard it said that the 5Dmk2 had trouble focusing, but I never found that to be true, and you are saying this is the best you've ever used....The amount of detail in the crane feathers is wild. I'm really tempted.....

Super sharp! I like the way part of the wings are facing towards you.

Wow!!!! Stunning image. Just love the head on angle, exposed perfectly, and superb detail.
    Very well done.

    Looks excellent!!
Last time you were raving about an expensive toy (Canon 800 f5.6) I ended up buying one. I read about the 5D Mark III on your blog today and went to check my bank account....
I think I will get the 5D Mark III and skip the 1DX until Canon release the next pro body that will be able to AF with f8 lenses so I can use my converters. It is especially important with full frames bodies. If IQ and AF of the 5D Mark III are identical to those of the 1DX then the only major difference for bird photography is the extra 6 fps. I am not sure I am willing to spend extra 3500$ for extra 6 fps....

You were the one raving about the 800; I just share the images :). A 1DIV on the big lens most of the time with the 5DIII on the 70-200 f/2.8L IS II on my shoulder with the 1.4X III TC is what I will be doing. But I will switch the 5D III to the 800 for most flight photography.... And I am getting a 1DX too.
