    Default Sacred Kingfisher Fledgling

This fledgling had just left the nest (nest hollow at top of image) about 15 seconds before this image was taken. It sat there for about a minute taking in its new big world before flying up into a nearby tree.

    EOS 5, Canon 100-300 F5.6L, ISO 100, Natural light with fill flash, 1/125sec F11, Hide/Tripod.

Great details and eye contact. Maybe a bit too much flash and I find the dark spot above the head a bit distracting.

Wonderful capture. Is the perch one the you put in place? The odd position of the near-wing makes it appear that you are well above the bird but the head position indicates that you were pretty much on the bird's level... EXC head angle.

Excellent pose, head angle and perch. I like the oof nest hole above the bird since it tells the story, but I think that putting the bird lower in the frame to include the top of the nest hole and a little space aboe it wouold have been better. Beautiful color and detail.

Yes Art - the perch was placed near the nesting hole once the eggs had hatched.

Hi John, I humbly suggest that you could have selected a much better perch with respects to both the size (too big for this species) and the character (quality). The knob at the end of the stick is particularly unattractive.

The pattens and colors in the wings look great, and the details are fantastic. The image says a lot with the nest in the BG.

Agree with the Flash and perch comments above.

Totally agree Art - this was one of my very early bird photographs. I remember looking around for a more suitable perch but had to settle for one shown. I now carry a collection of more suitable perches in the back of my ute :D

Sounds like you are prepared for all occasions. Looks like the young bird is struggling a little with his new found freedom. I notice in a previous post of the adult bird I think there was a comment to remove the dark area above the birds head, in this case with the explanation of what it is, it adds another level of interest to the image. Well done.
