I just could not believe my luck, I was out with Barney (my dog) we were photographing grebes - trying to get the display in better light, the grebes were unobliging so we returned to the car. On the way I spotted this wren it was collecting moss as nesting material. I told Barney to sit down - and he did! I quickly pointed the camera at the wren and he obliged letting me get a few poses. This is another first for me - that's two this year already, first the grebes displaying and now this, who's a very happy bunny then?

Is that ever lovely! The sweet catch light, the soft greenery! This is one verdant image, that's for sure. Me-o my-o pizza pie-o! I sure do like this one!

Hi Johnathan.....Lovely light and the textures are gorgeous as well as the bg......beautiful image.....You might consider trimming just a bit off the top.

Good for you. A lovely look back pose and the nesting material is a big plus. I like the idea of the room at top but find the bottom a bit tight. Lovely bg and really nice to see bird centered on one of the lighter areas of bg.

Hi Jon, now you are just showing off. I really like the light in this, and you certainly captured a super pose. I like how he is showing off his nesting material to you, and the little guy is nice and sharp. I do like the moss covered perch, together with the BG, and if this were mine, I would move the wren up in the frame a touch more. You could also create a pleasing horizontal in this too.

Very nice wren, light and moss. Do you know what kind of wren he is? We have a Pacific Wren (formerly a Winter Wren) in the western US that looks a lot like him and behavior sounds the same.

Pretty much a perfect wren shot; it is indeed known as Winter Wren so that answers Lauries question!.

Thanks for the C & C everyone, much appreciated, regarding the name Pacific wren - I learned something.
Composition:- I did intend landscape but there are some shadows/highlights and I have tried taming them but whilst it looks easy peasy it wasn't, I will have another go on a different pose. I will also have another look about moving him up in the frame or reducing the top just a little.

Lovely image here. Love the dangling moss. Gorgeous background. Good for you, Jonathan. Bird photography is hard work in the UK! This is a just reward for perseverance and patience!

Excellent shot. Liked the comp. good timing on the head turn. The moss in bill adds a ton. Good details, BG, light. Getting such shots without setups and calls is so tough. Well done.

Fantastic job, Jonathan. Winter wrens sure are elusive and speedy as all get out when you do see them. I can only dream of getting a shot like this someday. Beautiful light, comp, details, and background.

Fantastic shot here. I love the pose, nesting material, light, and background so much that I feel guilty wishing for it higher in the frame!
