Also called the African Purple Gallinule.
Not often seen out of the reeds, much less in the air.
Needless to say I was stoked with this. I have one with a nice full wing-stretch but really liked the pose here.

    Techs:
    Nikon D3s with Nikkor 500mm f4 VR-II
    f7.1 @ 1/3200 SS @ ISO-2500
Fair crop as it was some distance from the hide I was in

Morkel this is great Image...Excellent Psoe, Sharp, Well exposed, Nice wing position and beautiful light...the flying drops add to the image...I would be tempted to tone down the BG a bit, at least dark patch in front of the bird.

Never get used to seeing the size of the feet on these birds. Love the "running in air" pose you got here.

Agree but for the pond scum. Does everyone else above like the pond scum too? For me it is obviously distracting.

Great action and colours. I didn't pay too much attention to the pond scum, now you mention it it is a little less than ideal but it doesn't really bother me at all, I sort of expect it in this bird's habitat.

So typical of the species and a superb capture plus treatment. Thanks Morkel.

BPN is about helping folks learn to create fabulous contest winning images. Don't get me wrong; I like this image a lot. But when folks ignore problems or distracting elements in an image with their "great stuff" and "superb image" comments they are doing a disservice to both the poster and to BPN. And that goes double when they do not even bother to let folks know why they like an image.

Thanks for the honest feedback, folks.

Artie - you are right, of course, and I value any and all honest critique about processing and in-the-field issues that could have been better. This particular pond has seen an increase in "muck" and I intend to send someone out there to clean up the algae a bit.

I am with Arthur in this one. The bird is great, as is the pose, but the scum, well, it has been addressed.
