    Default Mountain Meadow Fall

    Attached Images Attached Images

One from last October that I've been playing with for awhile. I'd been wanting to get some elk with a fall colored aspen BG so I went more for mood than IQ on this darkening, early evening shot. This one's been reworked repeatedly as I tried to fine tune what I wanted so I could probably get a bit more out of starting over with the RAW. But I'll keep this one as a reference (at least until I change my mind again). 7D, 1-400L, f5.6, 1/60s, ISO 1600, +2/3 EC, monopod, small crop off the left as viewed. Also took out a couple of catchlights that muddied up the eye for me.

Hi Steve, I think you have achieved that, are they Larches in the BKG? Personally I cannot see any reason why not in revisiting images and improving the OP, as we are constantly learning and therefore doesn't our hard work deserve to be shown at it's best? Good call on the catchlights too. My only thought Steve, would be to run some NR from the top to the base of the tree line, ie to the middle, just to reduce some of the noise.

Good call on this one Steve.

PS Any in this years snow?

    Hi Steve,
Thanks for the feedback. Color or luminance? I have to say I'm really not seeing any noise up there (I did run a couple of heavy handed passes during processing) and actually thought I might have overdone it. But I've also not seen some of the noise mentioned in comments on other posted photos. Maybe time for a trip to the optometrist for me.
The trees in the BG are aspens. It actually snowed the following morning and I did get some photos with a covering of frost and snow (posted one back in Oct) but it was supposed to be a big storm and I needed to be back at work the next day.

No, it's me, ignore the comment Steve. I think it was all the various tones, dappled colours etc first viewed, although having looked at it in PS I did notice it has an untagged profile. In fact when opened and saved as an RGB file it certainly is rich in colour and quite striking, nothing to the web version as viewed, if it's like that, it's a cracker. The straw grasses come to life and the Aspens have a lovely fall colour to them.

    cheers

Sure does make a big difference in what I see whether I open in sRGB or RGB(Adobe). sRGB is what comes up with my browser (Firefox). Please don't confuse me (more) with color space and monitors .

Tom if the file is correctly saved in the right colour space then there is no colour difference/colour shift, as sRGB is the correct format for web display irrespective of Browser, therefore it is the correct way to go, hence the design of it. As an Engineer Tom, surely you would agree that you use the right tools for the right job.

Now, to the image itself Tom...

Good transition of the colors in the image to add depth to it. That makes the elk stand out almost is 3D.

Steve - the fall colors do come through and the vertical comp works well. I agree with Robert that the separation of the elk from the bg is very effective.

Thanks to all for the comments. I don't know what to say about the color management issues. This shot was taken with the camera set to sRGB. Canon's DPP was set to default the work color space to sRGB and the color match settings for display were also set to sRGB. The color settings in photoshop elements 3 are set to limited color management which is supposed to be optimized for the web and use sRGB as the working color space. I use the save for web option for my posts.
Unrelated to this post, I recently changed the camera settings to adobe RGB, the DPP working space to adobe RGB and the color match settings on my monitor to the recently calibrated profile I saved. After the changing to the calibrated profile I noticed there is no shift in color between viewing images in DPP and PSE3 (was slight color shifts before).

I think you achieved your goal here Steve. Love the colours and pose, and the IQ looks good overall (at least at this size).

Steve, beautiful, you accomplished what you wanted in my opinion.
The DOF is perfect, has a 3d quality, and the colors are superb.
I actually think the best part is the FG grass.
