Another image from my 2009 trip to South Africa. We spent lots of time with this white rhino so I was able to experiment with some close-ups and comps in camera. In looking back, this rhino's downward eye gave him a sad look that I thought could be ascribed to the increase in poaching Of course, I am anthropomorphizing.

Hi Rachel, I like this, I like the curvature of the head & horn with very good detail. Personally I might just lighten the whole head just a fraction, but that's just my thought, I trust Mr D will swing by with his thoughts too re B/W. The conversion works well in PS and I feel has given a better result. I have also been trying to think what options you might have re the BKG as I find it a tad close tonally to the subject and the two I think need separating more, black is too severe, lightening or darkening, not great, even adding some G blur. Lets see what others have to say.

As Rachel says, the most interesting part of the image is the eye. Which seems to require a different image crop??? (But no good suggestions).

Actually Tom, I said nothing of the kind. I said that I thought the downward eye was evocative of the sorrows of poaching but I actually find the most interesting aspect of the image to be the curve of the head and the way it fills the two sides of the frame. I designed this comp in camera and won't be changing it but thanks for commenting.

    Hi Rachel,

The horn stands out first to me, then the eye. Certainly shows of the texture of the skin. BG lighting/texture looks sufficiently different to me but perhaps a slight darkening/burning of just the inside outline (or the entire body) of the rhino could address the issue Steve K has with the tonality.

No problem Tom. Steve and Steve - thanks for the comments and suggestions. Funny though, you each suggested the opposite.

    Thanks again,
    Rachel

The framing is fro the curvature of the head so I like how you accomplished that Rachel. In this case the eye is not the center if interest but the graphical nature of the subject. He does look sorrowful, so I think you did well in capturing that feeling.

    Hi Rachel

Its always good to try different composition ...

The first reaction from my first view was to be pulled in two different directions first towards the sharp area "eye" then to the OOF "horn" .. I really like the eye and detail around it... but the cut primary horn and OOF secondary horn detracts too much imo.

Hope to see some more of the close ups..

Interesting abstract study here Rachel. I like the tonal range and the textures, but find myself agreeing with Peter about the need to have either the main horn "in frame" or the horn that is visible as sharp as the rest of the detail...

Rachel, I can feel the texture of the Rhino's skin with my eyes. While it is a creative image, I would like to see the entire head of the Rhino in sharp focus. I look forward to more of your imaginative images.
