He looks a little mad at you Robert. The beak and his left eye are sharp but then dof falls away quickly. Nice shot.

Hi Robert, interesting behaviour from the owl. Im amazed the sharpness you achieved for such a slow ss, and being so close, one can expect the DOF to fall away fairly quickly. Love the complimentary BG. Any chance of getting back there in good light?

It sounds like a memorable experience and you have done very well recording it. Not much you could do about DoF given the conditions. My preference would be to reduce the blue color a bit. Amazing eyes.

Robert, what an incredible bird. The one we had here was quite bold as well. loved the details. Did you get one with both eyes in the focal plane? shallow DOF would have worked perfectly there.

I laughed my you know what off when i read this. That is too funny and a great image came from it as well. Considering you couldn't move to change the aperture I am happy to see you got the focus point perfect on the face. Love it.

Very nice portrait Robert. I like the reflection of the setting sun in the left pupil.Very cool. Eyes are nice and sharp and at this close distance even a f 22 would only give you an extra 1/4 inch or so DOF . well done,
Gail

Nice portrait Robert, you captured their character nicely and I like the somewhat "flattened" head look here (I've gotten some shots of this same look before). I think this needs just a touch of darkening around the beak tip to help it stand out more from the surrounding feathers (surprisingly clean beak on this one). As for your closeup encounter, I had one run up to me while I was in my car, got so close I thought he was gonna ask for a ride
