    Default Looking for Lunch

    Canon 1D2n, 500mm F/4, 1.4xII, f/8, 1/640s, flash

This sharp-shinned hawk is one of my backyard regulars. He was uncommonly tolerant of me today, and allowed many close range photos. Unfortunately, he has a preference to land on man-made items (iron gate, barbeque grill, feeder platform, etc). In this photo he is perched on the fence, but by "sandwiching" him between a near and far tree, the fence was eliminated from the photo. A barn swallow flew overhead at this moment which caused him to look up. This was close to noon, so I was using fill-flash to help balance the midday light.

    Comments and critiques are welcome...

    Regards,
    Mike

    Hello Mike,

Extremely harsh light. The leaf in the BG takes away from your main subject. I also find the leaf in the FG too powerful in the frame.

    Keep them coming.

You are so lucky to have this hawk hanging around your yard! Maybe if you put up some sturdy large natural perches (with clean backgrounds behind) he will start using them. You could make yourself some wonderful opportunities for this beauty. The light is harsh, and you were somewhat off the light angle. Try to get in a position where your shadow is pointed at the bird. Hope to see more of your images of this bird!
