Default Male Annas Hummingbird - Perched

Shot with Nikon D300s, and Nikon 300mm (f/4.0) lens, handheld.

f/5.0, 1/400 sec., ISO 720, pattern metering, exp. bias -0.3 step. Image is pretty heavily cropped so there's room on all sides to expand if it's too tight. Happy to take suggestions.

    Comments welcome.

Peter, love the image. I might try to soften the edge that showing up in the BG just left of the gorget. A vertical would be great too. I'd also darken the birds back a bit.

I'll add my praise for this lovely image and also a hearty batch of congratulations for capturing the bird handheld at 1/400...

Thanks Alan - very helpful. I hadn't done any specific adjustments on the hummingbird's body, so I will work on that. Same goes with that edge you refer to - I hadn't really noticed that.

As for the vertical - I can re-post after I get a chance to do a bit more work on it. I originally worked on this as a vertical then changed my mind. Not sure why.

Thank you Jack. Normally I'm shooting in S-priority or manual and usually shoot at 1/800 or faster but for these I switched to aperture-priority - didn't actually check my shutter speed until I got home. Was a little surprised too, though I was pretty close to the subject (according to the file data I was 3.6 meters from the subject for this one).

    Glad you liked it.

Hi Pete, good eye contact, and good DOF too. I really like the colours on this guy, and although Im fine with this comp, I agree, a vertical will work too. Well captured.

Hi Alan - thanks again for the suggestions. I went ahead and processed a vertical version - applied same general adjustments in LR, though brought the brightness slider down a bit more. In Viveza I darkened the back of the hummingbird which seemed to enhance the green color a bit. You may also notice a slightly darker color cast in the bottom right corner - I eliminated some distracting leaves, though I probably need to match that color a bit better.

Regardless, here is a vertical version.
