    Default Snow Wars

Japan has been beyond amazing. These battling Red-crowned Cranes were photographed on March 7 at the Tsurui Itoh Sanctuary, Hokkaido, Japan with the Canon 800mm f/5.6L IS lens and the EOS-1D MIV. ISO 400. Evaluative metering +2 stops of the white snow: 1/1600 sec. at f/5.6.

And yes, AF works at times in the snow. About 1/2 the time. My success rate with action and flight using manual focus is about .000074 so I figured that I was better off at 50-50 :).

Don't be shy; all comments welcome. I will be home at midday on Tuesday, March 13 and am looking forward to it after two very long trips of nearly a month each: the Southern Oceans trip and the Japan IPT. Yeah, I know--no sympathy for me.

Small crop from behind. NIK Color Efex Pro/Detail Extractor/Tonal Contrast brought this to life. Lot more on Japan and NIK by clicking here and then scrolling down.

Superb action, Artie - probably the best image I have seen of these cranes from this location. Beautifully composed and very atmospheric. I am rather intrigued by the double line to the snow horizon - any ideas how this occurred?

Excellent story, action and execution, Artie. Like Melvin, I too am wondering about the snow horizon. Very very nicely done.
If you have more room, I'd probably add a bit more to the bottom and the left.

This really shows the weather condition very well. Great action shot and the BG compliments the birds' colors perfectly.

Love that bg and falling snow. I feel just a bit tight on bottom. Excellent action shot. Focus certainly on the mark here.

Thanks. I missed that. It is surely from NIK Color Efex. When this occurs the easiest thing to do is add a Layer Mask and erase it with a soft brush. It is more difficult to lose it after the fact. I will try to redo the image and repost it here but that will likely not be real soon as I travel home over the next three days....

    Artie,

Superb image. I am sure the contrast in the presented image appears much greater on both the birds and background than as seen by eye.
Do you think masking the effect off the background would help provide for a more realistic interpretation, and help to further POP the birds?

    Best,

    Chas

I like this! Interaction is awesome! Wish they were both facing your way rather than away from you. I also see the double line at the BG which looks like an artefact to me.

Hi Artie - wonderful action image. I have a question about the Color Efex adjustment - is the Detail Extractor a new feature in Color Efex (I don't have the latest - I'm using version 3.0)? After seeing this I went in to look for it but didn't see it as one of the options. I'm sure I'll upgrade eventually - this seems like a very useful feature.

    Thanks,

    Pete

Hi Artie - another thank you - Silver Efex 2. I upgraded Silver Efex when I upgraded Color Efex today, and NIK applied the BAA discount to both Color Efex 4 and Silver Efex 2 upgrades.

Thanks a stack Peter. Every little bit helps. Use Detail Extractor judiciously. It is killer on the WHITEs. I usually go 30-80% opacity but sometimes more.
