Superb on all counts. Flower, sharpness, and pose all superb. The only thing that bugs me a bit is the darker area behind and left of the flower.

Where were the flashes and at what power settings? What lit the background?

Both flashes were on either side of the bird at 45 degree angles. The height of the flashes were just above the bird. The fall-off from the flashes was enough to light the BG.(Printed BG board)
The flashes were at 1/32 power. Stay warm in Japan. It's 78 here today ;-)

These shots are jaw droppingly good, I have looked at the image three times already, an absolute gem of a shot- I take my hat off to you Alan.

    Alan:

Excellent, and I love that you were able to achieve this result with a modest setup (limited number of flashes)

    Sharp, beautifully composed, exposed.

D300s can still turn out nice images.

    Cheers

Truly a stunning image! I like how the greens in the bg and leaves are all mirrored in the shades of green in the bird's feathers. Outstanding work!

Gorgeous, Alan. Colors are very complementary.

How many different species of hummingbirds do you get at your TX workshops?

Great Photo, i would like a less homogeneous background, perhaps one with fuzzy blurred leaves

    Hey Allen,

There are a few species of Hummingbirds that winter in South Texas, but we only photograph one species, and that's only if we get rained out from doing songbird setups.

Very special image Alan, as usual and the use of only two flashes demostrate that your technique is a good one!
