The Grey Ghost - AKA Northern Harrier male hunting close to the ground. Captured at Satwiwa, in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. Late afternoon hazy sun made me push the ISO to 800.

    1D4, EF400mm f/5.6L + 1.4x = 560mm
    Manual mode, f/8@1/1600 ISO 800 WB 5100K
AI Servo autofocus, hand-held no flash

Beautiful photo of a not very photographed bird.
I see a lot of Harrier's, but rarely see these guys.
Congrats on a very nice shot!

Shows nicely the typical hunting behavior of this species. They are difficult to capture like this, well done. The exposure and sharpness look great. I really like the environment in the frame as well. My only suggestions might be to try a crop with bird slightly more to the right side of the frame and maybe try increasing the color temp a bit. Great image, wish I had one! I saw several but never got very close to one at Bosque....good excuse to go back

Well done Kerry. I agree with Joel's positive comments relative to the technical aspects of the image. The foreground shrubs nicely frame the subject. The fluffy clouds are a good bg.
These guys are always just out of range for a quality image. I've had reasonable results watching for a while and observing their flight pattern. They tend to like structure, such as a creek or the edge of a marsh. I'll find cover in the anticipated flight path and ambush them.

Love this shot Kerry, The blue in the hill in the Bg is something I like personally. would like to see more contrast in the abdomen of the bird (may be that area is slightly hot).

Would have liked to see the bird looking at you but I guess it was too busy. dont you just hate it when they act so pricey???......
