Have been away awhile... busy with non-photographic things unfortunately ...I thought I would kick start my return with a black and white as I see from the thumb nails.. there are way too few ...

Image is close to full frame... capture in Etosha last year.. black and white conversion done in PS CS5..

    Welcome back Peter.

Very nice concept and very well executed. Like the half adult and full young one combination. Young one is working as a great anchor and keeping my interest in the frame. All in all a wonderful composition and brilliant execution. May be a little bit off of the bottom? I kind of feel there is too much black in frame for my taste.

    Glad to see you back.

    -Sid

Knock me down with a feather Mr D, LOL.

I like the concept and the contrasting B&W tonal range, but will skip on the sharpness . I can see where Sid is coming from and would probably agree on reducing the depth at the foot, or at least take a look. Bet it would nice in a big format print?

BTW what is in the water, looks like a mini grebe

Nice to have you back Peter, but for how long?

    Hi Peer,
I really like this. The sideways trunk makes me think he is giving the adult the elephant equivalent of the third finger!!Or perhaps "Blow it out your ear, Mom". The black and white conversion works well and I like the debris in the water that looks like a little duckling. The direct gaze of the litlle elephant really draws the eye in and the trunk leads me to the exiting ellie. Very nice and unusual.
I would take a smidge off the bottom . No nits otherwise,
    Gail

Peter - Welcome back, your posts have been missed. I like this a lot. Nice conversion with good shadows and light. The youngster is cute and the exiting adult adds interest. I like Steve thought it's a bird in the water, but maybe Gail is correct and it's just debris?

    TFS,
    Rachel

    Hi Peter,

An interesting concept here, I am with most other people on the amount of dark at the bottom.

Clearly a bird but no possible identification from me without colour.

    Peter,

I like the overall composition but feel a top and bottom crop is needed to better balance the image. I also feel the grass is too bright and the blacks to black.

Repost I cropped it, opened up black and darkened whites using Shadow/Highlight Adjustment and then added some black using Selective Color to the blacks.

Thank you all for comments... it is a Dabchick not debris or rubber duck lol...the crop is 1:1 which for me was the stronger and more appealing than the 4:6 , 4 etc..
appreciate the rework Robert ... but I like to have a good tonal range in my black and whites ... creates mood...

The black and white processing is very nice. I keep looking at this and can't decide whether it is brilliant or whether you completely blew it cutting the elephant in half.
It is kind of mesmerizing, so I would probably go with brilliant.

Good to see you back Peter.
I love the look of the young one and your processing with the tonal range. Not too sure about the comp personally, I might have liked something like this a tad more (a taste thing I guess?)

    WDYT?
