    Default Sunset Landing

Photographed this Barred Owl landing just as the sun was going down. I like the way his talons and legs are outstretched and how he is so concentrated on his landing. This was a set up. Although we had called the owls in earlier, in this particular instance, the owl returned on its own.

Sweet incoming shot. Looks like it was going to sit on the perch. Love the evening light. Looks like you guys have been having fun with this owl, this shot is by far the best of what I have seen.

This is great Marina! The pose is awesome and looks sharp to me. I like it as presented but maybe just a tiny bit too yellow. Here is a repost with some cooling filter applied and some selective levels adjustment.

That is really nice. I like what Ofer did in the repost, but great timing to get this.

    Hi Marina,
As I was typing my response Ofer submitted his repost and adressed my nit about the image which was that it was a tad too yellow. I absolutely love the outstretched talons and the appearance that he is sitting on the tree. Well done and cool picture,
    Gail

Well I just reviewed my pictures from that afternoon and the progression of the yellow in my photos as the sun lowered. I did not touch the colors in this capture at all. While I like Ofer's repost very much, I do not feel it is representative of what I saw and captured that evening. This owl just lit up from the setting sun. Maybe I could pull back on the yellows a little, and find a middle ground between the two. That said, I am still very interested in hearing everryone's opinions.

love this Marina, especially those outstretched feet. I was re-reading some of what David DuChemin talked about - where he said for himself, he wants to capture/express what he felt at the scene. Just took a class with Stephen Johnson who said it is different for each artist - but he wants the absolute exact truth of the scene in his shots. I think I lean more towards DuChemin's philosophy - but I guess the important part is to be true to yourself in whatever you choose. That said, I like the golden bird. Wonderful capture...

Marina, you were there, so I leave it totally up to you. I've had a few critiques in the past that have commented on my color temp and I end up confused because I always try to represent what I saw, not alter it in my processing. I find your original post and the colors to be beautiful as is the pose and intensity of the owl as he lands.

I prefer the color of the original as I do think it's more representative. I too have a shot I'll be sharing of a barred owl flying at sunset and it's amazing how yellow thy "become." I appreciate Ofer's efforts but it looks almost like the coolness of flash in that version. Fantastic capture by the way, love the wingspread, the intent look, the outstretched talons.

This is absolutely stunning Marina. The outstretched legs, the black bg, great light, perfect comp and great perch.
Masterfully done. I think I'd go with warmth between the OP and Ofer's repost.

Hi Marina, great timing here, and love the landing pose with the outstretched wings and extended legs. I do like how the owl pops from the darker BG. With regards to the colour, Im actually not familiar with the owl even in natural daylight, but feel toning down the yellows a touch may work.

Great flight shot here. I prefer the original post as well because I like the golden lighting that is being cast on this flighty fellow. To me, it almost looks like he is sitting on the branch and about to roll over backwards with his wings outstretched saying...Whoa!!! All humor aside, I think it is a great photo.
