    Default Steller's Sea Eagle stretch

    Attached Images Attached Images

Stellar's Sea Eagle about to touch down on pack ice in the Nemuro strait off Hokkaido Japan.

You should be able to still see the bill tip icicle even at this small size.

Made with my D300S back up body.

    NIKON D300S,Sigma 50-500mm @ 290mm, 1/2000, F8, Auto ISO @ 360, Exp. Comp.: 0.0, Subject dist: 18.8m. Handheld.

CS5, Nik, slight crop off bottom.

It feels really good to be able to return to Japan and this trip with Artie has to be better than all of my previous trips here, each day seems to get better and better. The Rausu section of the trip for sea eagles was especially amazing. This trip for our group has been such a success I cant wait to return here next year and we haven't even left Japan yet!

    Hi Robert,
Glad to hear you are having a good time in Japan. I really like this landing pose ( looks like a few seconds before Artie's landing shot from a different angle!) The tail and body IQ look great but something is a bit off around the head and there is a sharpening halo around the bottom of the wing. You are the master and guru of CS5 and NIK in my books so something is definitely not right on the computer end. It looks like you posred at smaller than 1024 x 800.
Your exposure is perfect for the blacks and more importantly the whites. I love the clean BG as I know how hard it is to get these shots without the gulls and crows in the frame. I am so glad to see you posting here and show us more!!

So glad to see you posting, and what a great capture. Love the colors of this bird against that blue. A great landing pose with nice feather details. Would have liked to see this a bit bigger to better see the icicle on the bill you describe. I do see a slight halo around much of the eagle.

Glad you are all having such a wonderful trip. Looking forward to more captures from Japan!!!

Yes, with so many birds around isolation is key. A spectacular pose and other positives noted by Gail are right on.. But I will bust Robert for head angle as the bird's head is angled slightly away from us. I have many similar ones :). The trip has been totally amazing. I don't mind the head angle and it is a great landing pose and very well framed.

I missed his landing image. I am at dinner with him now, he says he didn't past a Steller's landing. Maybe you are thinking about Chas?

HA should be fine Artie, AFAIK an eagle will look where they landing or striking, so with the wings, legs, tail and talons angled towards my position it looks like it the head should be slightly angled towards me.

    Thanks for commenting.

Hi Marina, thanks for the comments.

I didn't notice the Halo but now that you mention it I do see some along the bottom I will re-do the sharpening and re-post later when I get a chance. That is what I get for rushing to process and post before we go out shooting in the morning!

    Thanks again,

    Robert

Okay, this version should look much better, zero sharpening in conversion and only local 100-0.5-0 after resizing.

RP is a knockout. Not only removed the halo, the image appears a little sharper, with the icicle showing much more clearly. Nice!
