Shot from kayak, hand held as he swam to my left. The sun was directly to my right and behind me. This is 1 of 2 that frequent the pond here in Parsonsfield Maine. They will come right up to my kayak, sometimes too close, 10 feet. This one was about 25 feet away. I can truly say that the loon is my favorite bird. The cry of a loon is hauntingly beautiful. Once you hear it, it never leaves your soul! I hope they will always be with us.

I cant wait to go out on the ponds this next few weeks to image them once more. May you have the awesome privilege to see and photograph them too.

    Grady:

Very nice image! I have a cottage in Northern Michigan, on a modest lake. We are blessed with 1-2 pairs of loons each year. They will often come in close to our cottage, but as soon as you move about, they move away. My wife bought a kayak for me for Christmas, so I can get closer to them. I can't wait for it to warm up enough to try it.

I don't think they nest on our lake, but there are large tracts that are undeveloped, so they may be over in that area. This summer, I will go looking (carefully, as I don't want ot spook them.)

Keep the beautiful pictures coming. I agree about their call, it is special.

Nice low perspective you've achieved with your kayak! Nice pose, good head angle and sharp detail. Framing is just right. Nice detail in the dark head, and the whites are right on the edge. Looking forward to more loon images! I

Nice image. I live in Minnesota and the Loon is our state bird. There are more Loons in Minnesota than any other state, its a wonderful thing waking up to the sound of them on the lake across the street.
