Another image I have revisited. Taken on Genovesa Island in the Galapagos in April 2009.

    Canon 50D
    100-400 @ 210mm
    1/320
    f 5.6
    ISO 800
    EC +.67
HH, luminosity mask, levels, curves, decreased the reds, cropped for comp and sharpened in CS5.

    C&C welcome and appreciated. Thanks,

    Rachel,
Well worth looking at again, a wonderfully innocent pose.

I wonder if you could do something about the OOF body in the lower right as viewed, not that it is that distracting.

Hey Rachel, cool shot, cracking eye detail.

You have always had the information in the image, now you are extracting it, great post, detail sharpness & clarity is all there, BKG compliments the subject well and just gives focus to the pup. Tighter crop using RoT's works well and given the IQ no fear of any loss in quality or colour shift, as it holds up with the crop as a web image. Tech's look spot on.
Big congrats on this one, it's a winner.

Thanks Ken and Steve. Steve - The crop works for me, just wondered if I lost the easy knowledge that it was a pup if I got rid of the mom completely. The pup was nursing and looked up long enough to check out the semi-circle of photogs pointing strange things at him/her.

Thanks again for the kind comments,
    Rachel

Super looking IQ here Rachel and both crops work for me. Love the look of the eye, so clear, sharp, and glassy. Regarding your comment above about the brown LRC of the the OP, I don't think it provides the viewer any more clue that this is a seal pup than the subject itself. You did an excellent job of capturing its "pupness"

    Eachel,

I think the absence or presence of mum is not crucial to the image, obviously a closer crop will remove it but I like the shape of the original crop and the extra space.

I have just noticed some "circles" on the seal skin in the lower RHC, so perhaps as a compromise cropping around half of the space between the seal and RHS could work.

Thanks Steve and Ken, I'll play around with the crop a bit. Btw it's a sea lion, not a seal. Note the ears, their presence is one of the easiest ways to tell the difference.

    Rachel,

I agree with Ken, I feel the OP is the better crop. Steve's is to tight for me.

I like the bright BG as it sets of the darker seal very well. Great detail in the seal and perfect eye sharpness. Well done.

    Rachel,
I can see you in his eye:)
Nice pose and techs. I am more inclined towards original crop.
