    The bird is not in the UK but it looks a little like a rosefinch, I fear I may be complicating things becasue i suspect you may have a different name in USA

    I believe it is a House Finch.

    You were on the right track Jonathan. The European and Asian Rosefinches are in the Carpodacus genus as are the Cassin's, House and Purple Finches of Canada and the US.
