Out with Shadle a week or so ago on the awesome revamped Hooptie Deux on the Alafia Banks, along with Marina and Cheryl. So fun! We had bum light most of the day, which was a real challenge, but as usual James got us in terrific locations, with lots of bird activity and fly bys. He gave some excellent lessons on shooting in Manual as well.
I pushed my ISO here, as it was still early in the morning, as well as cloudy, and took off the TC for more light. This is a slight crop and I could crop more if people think that would be better. I kept the green in as I thought it added interest and gave a sense of place, but would be interested to see what others think.

Thank you very much for looking. All C and C most welcome and appreciated.

    Great shot Melissa!
I like the tighter crop better.
I would like to see higher contrast, but you did very well considering the light.

Nice flight image. Wonderful stop action. Either crop works for me but I like the detail more easily seen in the second one.

Nice flight shot Melissa. I would desaturated the reds in the tail and the topside wing as they tend to be too saturated with spoonbills.

Melissa, I think that you have two marvelous images from one frame. My personal favorite by far is the first one. The kind of light that you had that morning, while flat, certainly does give a nice pastel result and creates a rather quiet mood to the image. I love the eye contact and the green hint of habitat on the bottom, which also brings out the green on his face. It would have been nice if the rear wing wasn't partially obscured by the front one and I could use just a smidge more room at the top. One thing that is for certain is that composition and framing does involve alot of personal preference and taste so consider my thoughts just that.

Hi Melissa, I prefer the tighter crop because the image is so tack sharp that it allows me to see the excellent detail in the spoonbill. Sounds like you had a great "girl" time in Florida!

very nice flight, I prefer the 2nd one as the first one is too close to the border and creates a steeper angle impression. the tree line is too far from the spoonie, I'd just crop it out and concentrate on the bird

One more vote for the tighter crop. The IQ is too good not to show off. I regret not having gone out with James when I was in St. Pete last April -- just didn't know enough to take advantage of the chance. So I do not have any Spoonbills in my files. Not likely I'd have gotten one of this quality at any rate. Congratulations on a really fine image, with the wings right at the top and the great tilt of the head towards you.

Have to go with the tighter crop. The looser one is too close to the top of the frame IMHO and doesn't showcase those gorgeous colors and details. The head turn toward you really bumps this one up a notch and the 1D4 obviously handled the high ISO very well. Had I not known, I would not have believed you took this one while we were out together b/c the light didn't look this good so great job on processing!!!

I prefer the tighter crop because the back wing was not in the ideal position. If the back wing shows more, I would have gone to one in btw the two.

Regardless which crop you choose, what makes this image is the Spoonbill's eye contact with the viewer.
If folks knew what the conditions where like, they would be even more impressed the exposure and detail at the higher ISO.

Gail was correct, "girl" time was a lot of fun.

Wonderful shot. Excellent flight pose and detail. Love the evenly spread light and I too like the tighter crop.
    Well done.

Sounds like Captain Shadle was in great company!! Awesome colours and well done on the techs Melissa. I prefer the tighter crop here for the same reasons mentioned by Arash and Marina.

Thanks so much for all the helpful feedback! Tighter crop it is. (and yes, Clemens, will try that desaturation tip).
