    Golden-fronted Woodpecker

    Workshop: Alamo, South Texas

    D3, 300/2.8, ISO 1250, f4, 1/2000, flash @ -2.7

This was during a dark rainy morning. I cloned out a wire hanging down from the top of the frame with a grape at the end of it. We would pre-focus on the grape and shoot with the focus locked .When the Kiskadees and Woodpeckers would fly in to grab the grape that we placed for them, we would fire off many frames with the hopes of catching a good pose. This was so addicting and a lot of fun.

Thanks for explaining your setup Alan! An awesome frame! Did you have to clone out any part of the tree, or did you just get lucky avoiding any overlap with the bird?

    Hey Doug,

No tree, I built a horizontal stick that the wire hung from. The leaves were then added to the stick. The stick was placed into the hole of one of my tripod handles.

Very impressive capture and set up techniques, Alan. You continue to come up with these awesome ideas. The inclusion of the foliage is what makes this image so powerful...as well as the flight pose of course.

Great image and I really appreciate the explanation.
Creative idea, you make it sound so simple, but I am sure most people here
could not get this shot with the setup.
    Great work!

With ideas such as this one, you need to write a sequel to your e-book
