This is a setup. Nikon D700, 300mm f2.8, 1.4tc, tripod. 1/400, f6.3, iso640. White balance set in camera to cloudy but adjusted down to 5200 in acr. Slight -exp in acr. Very small levels, s/h, usm in cs3. Cloned away some stems from in front of the face. This is about 70% of the original.

Beautiful shot excellent detail, I have not seen this bird but it looks very similar to our house sparrow, I like the shots as is, but, and I am probably wrong, does it need just a little more contrast?

    Jack,
This is excellent. Great setup and Bg. I like the diagonal lines created by the grasses and I like the composition very much.I might add a point of black in the blacks and neutrals in selective coloring to give it a bit of pop. One of my favorites of yours,
    Gail

Very good IQ, and nice comp and terrific BG. The perch works beautifully and you got a perfect head angle. The eye looks plenty dark, but the rest of the bird could use more "pop" and I find the WB just a tad off (needs more red?). I do wish the crown was more complete, perhaps its the wind that displaced a few featehrs. Very appealing overall.

You have these down to a science!
One of your best for me, If you did not state it was a set up, how would we know?
The comp, focus and just overall IQ is topnotch.

Thank you all for your time and comments. Daniel, I cooled the white balance 5500 to 5200 in acr. I probably should have left it as shot. The crown does look a little odd.

I love this image. I'm not into sparrows so much, but this is really a winner. The color palette, soft light, diagonal lines and interesting perch make for a very aesthetically pleasing image.
