This is a reworked image, I originally posted this or a very similar one in 2010. It was a first for me for this species, and I regret to say I haven't been able to photograph another one since. I have the same dilemma I originally had regards composition and I have still retained the same or a very similar format. I would be grateful for your comments.

I like the comp and detail. A kiss of fill flash to open the shadows would be nice. I do find the grass on the perch a bit distracting.

I like the comp and the bird looks nice.
I would tone down the lichen on the perch a tad.

Hi Jon, your comp works well with regards to the placement of both redpol and perch. Perfect pose, sharp, and I do like the detail and colours on the redpol, together with the lichen covered perch. Great view of the feet, and the BG compliments the bird very well.

Thanks very much for the feedback everyone. The lichens have been toned down quite considerably, I prepared two images from raw and made a layer mask, then I selected the branch and erased it to reveal the darker layer.

Cute bird, nice perch and bg and nice look at the feet.
I think the light is quite interesting, although a touch of flash may have been an option. A slanted perch may work well too.
    Comp looks great.

Nice and sharp. Bird is a bit big in the frame for me.

Ah, I've missed these guys this winter! Good details and perch. I'm with Ofer about the size of the bird in the frame and I do wish for a slightly better HA.

I never heard about this species. We only have the Common and the Hory Redpolls. Excellent perch and bird as well as the background.

Thanks for the C & C everyone, I can't understand why I made the bird so large in the frame, I think the image would be improved significantly if the bird was a little smaller. Just for interest my original post is here (and I didn't misspell the title that time!): http://www.birdphotographers.net/for...duelis-cabaret

Real nice shot. Excellet detail, great background, and I really like the perch. I looked at your original and I like the comp of the original, but colors in this post are better along with the pose.
    Well done.

  15. Thanks Jonathan Ashton thanked for this post
